Former Super Eagles Defender, Taribo West, has confirmed that majority of footballers need charms to excel in the game of football. According to the former Milan defender, footballers often pay huge sums of money to get charms. He said charms were needed to protect players from different forces on the pitch. Pointing out that the fans at the stadiums are made up of different kinds of people, those who are magicians, some possess amulets and all sorts of supernatural substances, he said it was necessary for footballers to protect themselves from the forces. He also said he had a magical stone from Israel and a candle he used to burn before matches.
“In my playing days, when I was ignorant, I used to get some mallams and babalawos (magicians) to make charms for us, which we took to training camp. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t”, he said.
The fiery defender also said coaches are not left out. According to him, most of the big coaches in world football are involved with one magic man or the other usually from Senegal, Burkina Faso, Congo and Nigeria. These magicians, he said, reveal results of matches even before they are played.
Now a pastor, Taribo West urged the players to shun the use of charms and give their lives to Christ. This, he said, guarantees them of success without sorrow and regret
