The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has finally approved the scrapping of the award of the Higher National Diploma (HND) by polytechnics in Nigeria.
In this manner, the Federal Government has put an end to the award to just the student as of now on admission for different programmes nation in a move the Minister of Education, Dr. Adamu expressed structures part of the extensive change in the tertiary educational system .
This is pretty much surprising as the Federal Government is set to scrap programs right now being run by the polytechnics, which are not digital based.
As per the minister, under the new policy, the polytechnics will now get to be campus of the proximate universities with the Vice Chancellors of those universities selecting executives for the polytechnics, subject to the sanction of the Universities' Councils.
He expressed that two leading polytechnics – Yaba College of Technology and Kaduna Polytechnic, will change their terminology as they would now be known as City University of Technology, Yaba and City University of Technology, Kaduna.
Furthermore, to give legitimate teeth to these endorsements, the FEC affirmed the accommodation of two Executive bills to the National Assembly for sanctioning into law.
