U.S., other world powers finally get Iran to agree nuclear terms

President Barack Obama and Javad Zarif
Following months of high stake discussions and negotiations, the United States and other world powers have finally reached an agreement on the general terms of a deal that will ensure the peaceful continuation of Iran’s nuclear program.
The deal, announced Thursday evening in Switzerland, calls for Iran to limit its enrichment capacity and stockpile, as well as agree to enrich nuclear minerals only at one plant, and convert all other nuclear facilities for other uses, in exchange for the European Union lifting economic sanctions that have practically halted the Iranian economy.
Federica Mogherini, the European Union Foreign policy Chief for the European Union commended the action saying, “They have reached a comprehensive resolution that will ensure peaceful nation of the Iranian Nuclear program and the comprehensive lifting of all sanctions.”
“Today we have taken a decisive step and we have solutions on key parameters of a front comprehensive plan of action, the political determination, the goodwill and the hard work of all parties made it possible.”
The United States will lift many sanctions on Iran as soon as they confirm the Country’s implementation of the agreement. U.S President Obama also praised the world powers involved, namely Russia, China, France, the United Kingdom and Germany and the United States and strongly warned Congress not to stop or stall the deal.
“I am convinced if this framework leads to a final, comprehensive deal, it will make our country, our allies, and our world safer. If Iran cheats, the world will know it,” Obama said on Thursday from the Rose Garden at the White House.
“If, in fact, Prime Minister Netanyahu is looking for the most effective way to ensure that Iran doesn’t get a nuclear weapon, this is the best option.
“If Congress kills this deal not based on expert analysis and without offering any reasonable alternative, then it’s the United States that will be blamed for the failure of diplomacy. International unity will collapse.” He stressed.
Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif also commented, stating that though the ‘proud people of Iran’ will not accede to closing their facilities, “Iran will, however, abide by the agreement, which would limit enrichment activities to one location,” he said.
Leading negotiators announced the deal in a news conference in Lausanne, Switzerland, where they have been meeting for months.
Negotiators must resolve additional details of a final deal by the end of June. The announcement marks the end of a round of talks that started last week.
