U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon
The United Nations, UN, Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon has acknowledged the efforts of the Nigerian Government, led by Goodluck Jonathan, towards conducting transparent, free, fair and credible democratic elections come March 28.
Ban Ki-Moon, who spoke through the Under Secretary of the United Nations Political Department, Jeffrey Feltman, on Wednesday, cited the significance of Nigeria in the UN and the March elections as the reasons for the UN’s visit to the country.
“The Secretary General of United Nations, his Excellency, Ban Ki-Moon, asked me to come to Nigeria to join his special representatives to West Africa, Ibn Chambas to talk with Nigerians about the Country’s important role in the United Nations and Nigeria’s forthcoming elections.
“We want to determine the challenges Nigeria is having along with support from its neighbours to contain the terrorists, Boko Haram.
“I have had a series of meeting with political leaders, government leaders, civil society leaders and security officials.
“I have been very reassured with what I have heard about the commitment of Nigerians to conduct transparent, free, fair and credible democratic elections in the March elections” he stated.
Feltman also said, “I have noted on behalf of the UN Secretary General the commitment of Nigeria political leaders in the January Abuja Peace Accord.
Also speaking, the National chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, stressed that the delegation had a robust discussion with various stakeholders of the Nigerian elections including political groups and Government officials to ascertain how up to speed for the polls the party is.
