Allegation of underage voting being investigated, Jega assures

The allegation of underage voting in some parts of the north is being thoroughly investigated, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof Attahiru Jega has said.
According to him, the commission received the report and promptly directed investigation, he told a news conference in Abuja on Sunday.
Consequently, he said the Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state concerned has been directed to investigate.
Jega said the REC has been specifically ordered to identify why it happened and to fish out the officers responsible for the registration of the underage voters.
The issue of underage registration and voting, he said remained illegal, vowing that culprits would be sanctioned in line with the provision of the law.
“We are investigating this (underage voting) and we will take appropriate measures once it is established,” Jega said.
The INEC boss also spoke about the violence incident in Gombe, describing it as unfortunate.
According to him, two INEC ad hoc staff died when Boko Haram members attacked some areas in the state.
