Determined to pursue their governorship ambitions, seven ministers are set to resign their ministerial positions effective from October 20, 2014, ahead of 2015 general elections.
President Goodluck Jonathan who confirmed this at a valedictory session the Federal Executive Council (FEC) held in their honour on Wednesday, however, said the concerned ministers are yet to turn in their resignation letters.
The ministers are Information, Labaran Maku (Nasarawa); Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu (Ebonyi); Labour, Emeka Wogu (Abia); Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Wike (Rivers); Minister of State for Trade and Investment, Dr Sam Otom (Benue); Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro (Lagos); and the Minister of State for Niger Delta, Darius Isiaku.
According to the President, the letters are expected to be submitted to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim, latest by October 20, in line with the ruling party’s directive.
According to the Peoples Democratic Party that all those interested in elective positions must disengage before October 20.
Addressing the Council, President Jonathan hinted that the seven ministers may not attend the next Cabinet meeting unless any of them decides to remain in the Cabinet.
“In politics you don’t conclude anything until it happens. The seven ministers may not be in council by next week Wednesday,” Jonathan hinted.
Prompt News recalls that the Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, was the first to announce that he would resign his ministerial position on October 20, to join Nasarawa governorship race.
