Tragedy occurred yesterday in Ubima in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State when a fish pond being excavated caved in, killing a young man and injuring three others.
The deceased, who was identified as Onwukwe Odi, and the three survivors, were said to be working on the pond when the incident occurred.
It was gathered that the survivors were lying critically ill in an undisclosed hospital, receiving treatment.
Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area Caretaker Committee, Chibuike Ikenga, who visited the scene and the survivors in hospital, expressed shock over the incident.
“It was unfortunate. We did not anticipate this for our people; even those that were involved never anticipated that it would lead to loss of life. I cannot measure the excavation, but it is high. I had expected that they would have a better way of doing it,” Ikenga said.
