A Nigerian Air Force Mi-35 Helicopter has crashed in Bama, Borno State, killing two persons, Defence Headquarters announced on Monday.
According to the Director of Defence Information (DDI), Major General Chris Olukolade, the helicopter was on a training mission when it developed technical fault.
He said one of the pilots of the Helicopter has been recovered alive while “the second one as well as the technician on board the 3-member crew flight died in the crash”, saying “rescue is still ongoing”.
Olukolade however quickly ruled out sabotage, pre-empting insinuation that may arise that the helicopter may have been brought down by the dreaded sect, Boko Haram.
The DDI also said investigation has commenced while assuring Nigerians that they would be kept abreast of developments.
A terse statement issued by Olukolade reads, “A Nigerian Air Force Mi-35 Helicopter on a training mission this afternoon, crashed due to technical fault at a location South of Bama. “Investigation has commenced to unravel the circumstances that led to the accident.
“Meanwhile, it is established that the crash is not as a result of any enemy action.
“Further details on the crash will be made known as soon as the investigation is progresses.
Despite the declaration of state of emergency in three frontline states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe, in May 2013, the dreaded insurgents, Boko Haram have intensified attacks in that part of the country.
Of late, several twons and villages including Bama, Chibok, Damboa and others have witnessed incessant attacks that have resulted in loss of lives and the recent abduction of over 200 schoolgirls in Chibok that are yet to be freed.
